Christian Azzouni (he/him, b. 1995) devotes his artistic practice and artistic research to the relationship between reality and the photographic image. He pursues a painterly process in which photochemical liquids are applied only in parts to photographic paper. Through this painterly process, the format and the resulting handling of the paper to a physical, performative act, which is captured in the image by the light-sensitive surface and the simultaneous activation of the emulsion layer. Since the chemicals that have already been applied can no longer be altered, Azzouni questions the origin of what is considered reality, and at the same time makes the artistic and painterly process itself transparent through the visibility of every single brushstroke. The hybrid animal beings in his works are from his own and others’ experiences of racism and adopt a humanist perspective, as Azzouni reflects on asymmetrical power relations, racism and his own Palestinian-Austrian heritage. He calls this method by his own term, “Figurigramm.”
